Memory jogger

My great-aunt taught me to knit when I was six. I used to help her wind the wool first - my job was to hold my hands out in front of me with the skein taut while she wound it into a ball.  A necessary chore, of course, but boring ! Mum used to knit too so there always seemed to be wool to hold. I was glad when they introduced  wool ready wound into balls. Some still comes in skeins though - such as this Rowan Valley Tweed which arrived today. Having no-one to hold it for me I had to improvise by draping it  over the back of a chair. As I wound it the memories came back of 70 years ago when the world was a very different place immediately after the war.
