Houmet Paradis

Another changeable day with sunshine and showers. During my lunch hour we went picking blackberries at Bordeaux on the east coast.

This blip is from Bordeaux looking over at the tidal island of Houmet Paradis. Cut off at high tide, this island is 4 acres in size and uninhabitted, except for wildlife, including nesting seabirds. It is administered by the National Trust of Guernsey.

Previously, rock from the island was quarried. In the distant past the island was known as Houmet de l'Eperquerie. An eperquerie was a location where fish were hung on horizontal poles, dried and salted. In the middle ages large quantities of Mackerel and Conger eel were exported. Other locations where this occured around the coast were at Pecqueries Bay and Pezeries Point, the names of which originated from eperqueries.
