Fish Eagle Dam

Gauteng's biggest private open space and best kept secret, the Modderfontein Reserve, has been formalised and is now open to the public. Great news, as it is right on our doorstep, being about 5kms from home. The dam pictured, is one of 4 within the reserve.

Took a drive out there this afternoon for an initial look see, and am sure we will spend many hours there, particularly with our bird watching. Without much effort, recorded 37 species in the short time, including Long-crested Eagle (Lophaetus occipitalis) and African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer).

The nature reserve covers an area of 275Ha and forms part of the 2400Ha land holding owned by chemicals group AECI.

Development is ongoing, with the removal of alien vegetation to be replaced with indigenous flora, as well as walking and cycling trails.
