Bee and Bee Hotel Number 1 (extra)
One of my current projects is constructing bee hotels for the numerous bees who visit my garden, and in the hope of encouraging native Blue Banded Bees.
The bee hotel featured (EXTRA) is a ground level one with drilled holes in short lengths of eucalypt branch and short lengths of hollow bamboo to help fill the gaps and keep the arrangement tight. This variety is enclosed in a ceramic pot, steadied with sandstone rocks, the opening facing the morning sun and the closed end of pot facing the direction of the prevailing winds. I have placed four similar pots in this area that has bee attracting flowers and gets lots of sun throughout the day. The idea being that both the ceramic pot and the supporting rocks are warmed in the day and release heat during the night to keep the hotels a little warmer.
Time will tell whether the bees like them enough to move in.
