Orchid on Sandstone
A few years ago I learned about growing orchids directly on sandstone. It involves cutting into the block of stone to create a well, wrapping the orchid roots in fern litter and jute and then placing the root ball into the well. I weigh mine down with small pebbles on top. All the orchid needs then is regular watering.
This particular one grows indoors near a window for muted light and forms part of Smokey's own indoor garden since he's no longer allowed out. I hadn't noticed until yesterday that this orchid has produced its first flowers since it was placed in the sandstone 4 years ago.
It's now enjoying a position where I can admire the flowers more easily!
