McKenna Street.....

.....numbering 1-20, bowling green at one end and Garland's Bush Reserve at the other. A street of grand villa's, 1960's homes and more modern homes from recent times. The street is home to a NZ Historic Places villa, nestled on the edge of Masterton's only urban bush, bird life is abundant. It's not unusual to see mallards flying by when one looks out the kitchen window, ducklings frequent backyards during spring much to the delight of young children living in the area.

When Arthur Bunny, a well-known Masterton lawyer and son of a prominent early politician Henry Bunny, subdivided his land he named one street Bunny Street and another street McKenna Street, after his friend and long-serving Catholic priest Monsignor John McKenna. John McKenna was one of two Irish brothers who served as priests in Wairarapa, and who were both renowned sportsmen. He was also involved in musical and theatrical societies in Masterton. John McKenna died in 1930 after 43 years as a priest in Masterton.

It is here hubby's parents spent their last years. A home modern, light and warm, big enough to house family gatherings for all occasions, a view of the street which changed through the seasons, they were happy here after living in an older style home which was known as 'the family home'. Soon this one owner family home will be ready for new occupants.

Sunday - just like spring, cloudy with pockets of sun, warm then cool, brief showers and clouds rolling through. I enjoyed a wander from end to end of McKenna Street, some fresh air, listening to the birds and seeing two tigermoth's flying in formation above.

Enjoy the extra's :)
