Summer Is Over
It was the last round of matches of the cricket season and we had to hope for a minor miracle to reclaim the second promotion spot that had been ours until last week's washout. There seemed to be foul play afoot today for the opposition pitch looked like it had been deliberately sabotaged to try to avoid the game being played. I got the message from Forrest that the start was going to be delayed by some time.
To cut a long story short, the umpires were determined to get the match on and we demolished Steeton in a reduced 32 over game with 12 overs to spare. It was quite possibly the most entertaining 20 overs of the whole season. Forrest hit a run-a-ball 16 to set the tone for Struan to score 63 and finish the game from just 32 balls. He scored 97 against this lot at home this season, and a double hundred against them in the cup last season. I think that history plus the barrage of sixes over houses and into adjoining fields thoroughly pissed them off. After the game, I went to retrieve my bike and found that it had been locked away in the scorebox, and then told that the groundsman had gone home with the only key! I thought they were having a laugh, but when a key was eventually found, the mood was dark. There was nothing I could say to lighten it. All very strange, and rather sad really.
To get promoted we had to rely on our rivals not winning, which sadly didn't happen. We were just six points short in the end and the lads should feel immensely proud of playing some fantastic cricket this season. They've kept me thoroughly entertained of a Saturday. It seems like a long wait now until next April. Summer is over.
PS Hard to resist the rainbows at the moment. Thanks for all the love for yesterday's.
