The Broomway, Essex
I fulfilled an ambition today by walking the Broomway, reputedly "the deadliest path in Britain". It runs for five-or-so miles from Great Wakering to Foulness Island and is only passable at low tide. Most of it is walked ankle-deep in water.
I was alerted to its existence several years ago by ceridwen and it has fascinated me ever since. There is an excellent chapter about the Broomway and its other-worldly nature in Robert Macfarlane's The Old Ways (abridged version here).
It has taken until now to find somebody prepared to walk it with me. Michael accepted the challenge and, having completed the trip once before, he acted as guide. Michael's son Stan came along, too.
We started in a storm just after lunch and finished in evening sunshine. A memorable adventure.
There are a few Extras.
