Ghost Sign

This advert for Jennings Ale graces the side of an old building beside the River Derwent in Cockermouth. Cumberland as a county no longer exists but Jennings Brewey very much does, and continues to be an important industry in the town.

These colourful but faded hand-painted advertising signs date from the late 1800s onwards and have been coined "ghost signs". They advertise products and businesses which hark back to a time before huge global brands dominated. It's a disappearing artform as so many of the old buildings continue to be demolished.
