St Mary in the Baum

This church is directly opposite The Baum - one of the great pubs in the North of England - i.e. the world. Originally built as a "chapel-of-ease" in 1742 the original church remained in use until 1909, when it was decided that owing to the excessive cost of repairs (estimated at £8K) the building of a new church would be more economical. This was completed at a cost of £15K in 1911. The architect was Ninian Comper, an architect who was later knighted for his contribution to church architecture.
