Finally the oppressive heat has broken. The small inflatable pool we were given is no longer a necessity and so can be emptied and dismantled, returned to its box and stored safely until next summer. Firewood we must have been preparing as long ago as Jan/Feb and has been lying around in small piles all over the hillside ever since can now be moved to the log-shed before we have rain and they become soggified.

Spousie was busy in the veg garden planting cabbages and cauliflowers and I was barrowing logs to the log-shed and stacking them. I pull a wheelbarrow behind me the way a horse pulls a cart because that puts less strain on the lower back. The final load was heavier than the previous ones and a bump in the route caused the barrow to bounce, the metal brace between the two feet coming down sharply across my Achilles tendon.

I think there are about four levels of pain; the one less than “ouch”, then “ouch”, then swearing and finally not swearing. This was in the not swearing range.

Thankfully Spousie is a trained first-aider and bounded up the hill to help. There was a gash but the tendon looked to be in one piece. I felt faint and pukey so lay face down on the cool tiled floor while Spousie strapped me up. Then I went to bed and read all afternoon. No further photographs were taken. Monday will include a trip to the medical centre to show Spousie's handiwork to the professionals.
