Fiddleheads
It is always satisfying to unexpectedly learn something new. In exploring what to name this photo I came across the term fiddleheads, which is what the furled fronds of a young fern are called. They are called this because they resemble the curled ornamentation (a scroll) on the end of a stringed instrument, such as a violin. I never knew this term.
Furthermore, the fiddleheads of certain ferns are eaten as a cooked leaf vegetable. A variety of fiddlehead dishes are cooked in a diverse range of countries and cultures.
