Gems
Woke up to rain so had to adjust plans a bit. Had a lovely coffee at a fantastic nursery in Melkinthorpe near Penrith,(Extra.. our hosts) then continued to Carlisle where we were catching the train to Edinburgh... but first a stop at a little gem of a village church in Wreay. Could you even imagine this sort of decoration was done in 1840 ... BEFORE any Arts and Crafts movement activity ???. St. Mary's was built by Sarah Losh , a romantic genius, architect and visionary ... exquisite carvings , windows, sculpture, and natural decorations...her stipulation for creating this was that she got to do it her way.
google it for more. Fascinating.
Now ..without Paula we would never see the likes of these.. any one that knows PaulaJ knows how keen she is to research just about everything and I can attest to the fact that there is a book about just about everything on a shelf in their lovely home. She is a gem as is her hubby. A quick tour thru Carlisle, the wall and the cathedral and excellent pizza lunch and they put us on the train for the 3rd phase of this adventure... Scotland! How can it get any better?
