Marriage Material
Azzad, a friend, is directing this 3 component play/exhibition/self-experience thing. The play was commissioned by a local NGO, Sisters in Islam, who regularly battle the status quo for the rights of muslim women here. The plot revolved around a pair who no longer are compatible and highlighted, quite well in my opinion, a big issue here where muslim women don’t get to divorce their husbands, because that power resides only with the husbands. The best they can do is make an application with the religious body to review the situation and, hopefully, recommend for the dissolution of the marriage. As a result, companies of women are stuck in cycles of counseling and rejected applications leaving them unable to just move on with their lives.
Didn’t stay for the other components after the play. Was getting too hungry. Got a quick bite and watched the ending with Steven not getting star baker. Dangit!
