Salt Ponds, San Francisco Bay
I was back on a plane today and off to San Francisco. As we get close to the city, the normal approach is to fly south down the coast and past the city, and then the plane banks left and heads north to touch down at San Francisco airport. After the northbound turn we pass the Cargill salt ponds at Foster City, just south of the airport. The microorganisms in the ponds sometimes cause these ponds to display array of vibrant colours depending on the salinity and season.
From the Cargill website:
"Cargill’s operation in the San Francisco Bay Area is one of only two sea salt works in the entire United States. Since the Gold Rush, it has been recognized as ideal for salt making, thanks to the topography, the clay soils and a Mediterranean climate - just enough rain in the fall, winter and spring, followed by dry summers with steady breezes and plenty of summer sunshine."
