Conquering Calpe Rock
Today we climbed to the top of Calpe Rock - it's proper name is Penyal d'Ifac. It is a massive limestone outcrop emerging from the sea and linked to the shore by rock debris. It is home to numerous rare plants, including a number of endemic species, and over 300 species of animals, and a nesting site for colonies of sea birds and other birds.
Rising to 332 metres high, the rock is a striking visual feature of the Mediterranean coastline. Historically it was known to the Phoenicians as the Northern Rock, to distinguish it from its southern counterpart, the Rock of Gibraltar.
The blipfoto is taken of Penyal d'Ifac from the beach as we went for a swim to cool off. It took about 1.5 hours to climb it and the same to get back down and it was quite hot! It was good to cool down before driving home.
