Brownsea Island (Wednesday 27th September 2017)
I made it to Brownsea Island on Wednesday and met up with my brother The Spotlight Kid at Shell Bay car park. The sat-nav took me to Sandbanks rather than Studland so I had an unscheduled ferry ride to get the car to the right place but made it on time. There were a further four ferry rides throughout the day including of course the one to and from Brownsea.
The only squirrels on the island are our native red squirrels and we saw about eight of them throughout the day. I was determined to blip one of them and took a load of shots. However the unpredictability of the fast-moving animals, low light conditions, autofocus problems, undergrowth and (perhaps primarily) user ineptitude meant that back home all but about three were instantly deleted, leaving only this one where the squirrel is sharp. They were great fun to watch. Nearby we also found a young sika deer.
Perhaps the highlight was the lagoon close to the harbour, which was a wondferful haven for birds. We saw godwits, shovellers, egrets and herons, shags and cormorants and even good views of spoonbills, a first for me.
When we got back to Shell Bay we got a close view of a juvenile shag amongst some boulders. We ended the day with a meal at the Halfway Inn near Corfe Castle.
Extra: My First Shag ;-)
