Day 272/17. Alan Turing..... a true British hero.

The Alan Turing (with Enigma machine) sculpture at Bletchley Park. One of my heroes, and a bit of a pilgrimage for me today. An impressive sculpture.
The story of Alan Turing both personally and professionally is compelling. In huge secrecy, his team broke the German Enigma code during WWII at Bletchley Park (we visited there today) in the UK. Some believe that their work might well have shortened the war in Europe by as much as 2 years.
After the code was cracked, by Turing and his team, there was huge secrecy to ensure the Germans would not realise....all decrypted messages were rewritten to make it look like the information had come from spies and informers.
Personally his story is tragic. Clearly a genius, his homosexuality and consequential trial (different times.....) led to him committing suicide in 1954. Read his story if you want to be impressed.
The second picture today is of a Turpitz Enigma......a code machine produced by Germany to encode messages between Germany and Japan......also code broken by the teams at Bletchley Park. Amazing stuff.
