Parnas Fountain Brno

I took a drive to the Czech republic today to visit Brno, I've wanted to visit for a while especially if the MotoGP is on, perhaps next year. Brno is a great town, they're not really geared up for tourists but they have some great things to see here.

The fountain is called the Parnas fountain and is the dominant feature of the market square is the Parnas Fountain it is built according to the plans of the Viennese architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach somewhere between 1690 and 1695. It symbolizes a cave where a hero of the Greek myths, Hercules, ties up a defeated dog - Cerberus. Inside the cave are allegorical sculptures of three ancient empires of Babylonia, Greece and Persia, and the crowned Europe dominates over all of them. The water supply of the fountain was ensured by the oldest water main in Brno. Woodpeckers calls it the fountain of turds, she used to live close to Brno, you'll have to ask her why :-)

The Cathedral of St.Peter and Paul and Spilberk castle are great. The Capuchin Crypt was a must see for me. The front side of the church is decorated with the Baroque sculptures by Jan Adam Nessman in 1765. The most interesting place is the Capuchin crypt which is located beneath the church. Due to the good geological structure of soil and system of air-holes, it was possible to mummify the corpses which have been preserved in the underground of the church to the present-day. Except for the members of the Capuchin Order, the builders Ond?ej and Jan K?titel Ern and baron Franz von der Trenck (a commander of the Pandur and ?pilberk prisoner) are buried there. I deliberately didn't choose an image of the monks don't want to scare anyone :-)

Food and drink are very cheap, the Starabrno beer is great. You can some of the images I took here Brno

I hope you've all had good weekend :-)
