Ruined

Excellent day.

The night before it lasted forever - one of those endless nights of no sleep. But the day has more than paid me back for that.

Breakfast was a cosmopolitan spread of pastries, marmalade, cereal and the classic Catalan bread, garlic and tomatoes. And probably the best tea I've had outside of Britain!

A stroll along the coast took us, eventually, to the Greek and Roman ruins at Empuries. We were here when the kids were little but probably didn't get the best out of it then since (a) the kids were little and (b) we snuck in through the fence so didn't get the audio-guide. This time we went through the main door (they've improved their security) and so had the guide (very Philip Pullman voice) and therefore learned a lot more. Also, I think they've excavated more since then. Huge site - and they're only 20% through the Roman city, so it'll be worth coming back. (We've already decided to rent a villa here next summer!)

Then a speed walk past all the yoga folk, with an interlude for boules and fat-shaming porpoises, to lunch in Sant Marti - which is on the top five places in the world for me. An event was happening in the church which we figured was a christening until CarbBoy overheard some French folk saying it was a wedding and the bride hadn't shown up! Happy ending, she arrived in the end....

After waaay too many tapas, some very delicious rosado and an extremely Irish coffee (half whiskey?) we wobbled off home before the predicted downpour (after the amusement of watching the restaurants put awnings in place to pour the water on their neighbour's customers.)

We managed a paddle in the sea (and a chat with the Dutch Geordie barman at the beach bar) and a quick swim in the pool before the rain arrived, then a round of Yahtzee, which Mr B lucked out on. Dinner was pizza (with dates for me - that's a first) and home for trionimos, some unfortunate lodgers in TallGirl's hair (unfortunate in that they're dead now) and a mercifully early night.

My family are fun to hang out with. We have laughed a lot today.
