Narrow alleys in old town Rovinj

These buildings were in the oldest part of the town. The tall houses built on cliff walls backing onto the sea, this was originally an island. The island, dominated by the Baroque church of St Euphemia and its tower modelled on the Campanile in Venice, eventually became overcrowded and the town started to extend onto the mainland across a narrow channel. This channel was filled in with earth in 1763.

One speciall characteristic of the houses in this part of town is the type of built chimney (seen on both sides of the picture).

That was the last of the holiday blips from a very photogenic location.

I can recommend the area for photographers but we were less keen on the local airport at Pula, where we were delayed for nearly two hours seated on the plane, whilst it was decided whether we could actually take off in the prevailing weather conditions. These conditions did not seem particularly extreme and the problem involved a combination of changeable wind direction, quite warm evening air at 22 -24 degrees and the weight of the plane.

After much debate between the pilot and his HQ in Leeds as to whether to remove some luggage and/or fuel (because the preferred runway sloped upwards), we were eventually allowed to take off.
