Like the majority of glaciers in the world, the 250 foot high Margerie Glacier is retreating quickly and has receded about 65 miles in the last 100+ years. Although it moves at about six feet or almost two meters a day, it melts at a comparable rate. We watched parts of the ice falling with thunderous roars as the ice crashed into the deep sea. Immediately dozens of black foot guillemots then flew down to feast on the stunned fish below while sea otters and seals swam in the slightly calmer water nearby among the burgybits.

Some of the mountains have not yet been climbed and Mount Fairweather 15,300 feet [4,663 metres) high was not climbed until 1931.
