Town disrupted
I am sure that the Hampshire market town of Romsey will be greatly enhanced by present road works on one of the principal routes into the town.
At least those of us who have to find an alternative route into the centre , and shopkeepers along the way, certainly hope the £1.052 million reported cost is going to prove ratepayers’ money well spent.
The particular route, Bell Street has been closed to through traffic for a month already and the prospect is that the work will continue for another four months at least.
So this was the problem I faced going into town today. True, I could get to the car park and walk through to the centre, and to be fair there are plenty of signs for a diversion.
The project involves replacing the drainage system in the street, and rebuilding the road and pavement so that they are all on one level.
The council believes the scheme will enhance the town centre . . . But wait for it. There is a further plan which will disrupt the town’s market square and bring more chaos to the town centre, however short the work timespan may be.
