Sgwarnog: In the Field

The Bradford Monk

The Bradford Monk, Geoffrey Brindley, has been walking through the city for (according to some accounts) more then fifty years. He gave up his worldly goods and lived in a cave near Settle for a while, before being offered shelter in a Bradford suburb.

A recent campaign called for him to be an Olympic torch bearer and was backed by thousands of people in the city. I suspect he would have been too humble to accept.

As a local character, he is held in great affection. His comings and goings are often recorded by Bradford folk on Twitter, and there is a website devoted to sightings. There is even a life-sized characature of him on display in Bradford at the moment, as blipped by @appertunity.

As I live in the same village, I often see him heading out on his perambulations in the morning, and sometimes, like this morning, he joins us on the morning train into town.
