Vestibule
None of the houses I lived in as I grew up in London had a vestibule. The front door opened directly into the hall. However, my northern relatives all had that little entry room where muddy shoes and wet coats could be removed before you entered the house proper. That seems a very sensible idea and the word comes from Latin, because the idea has been around since at least the time of the Romans.
This is the door to the vestibule from the inside of number 8. The glass is probably original, from 1906. The light is coming in from the modern front door and the (original) window above it.
This is a backblip. Today's blip (6 Oct) will shortly be appearing.
