No longer a gaslight
Went out for a walk this morning. Like last night, there was a thick layer of cloud at horizon level so the sunrise was as uninspired as was last night's sunset.
On the edge of the footpath outside 8 Ponsonby Road was an old lamp post, with what must be the original gaslight fitting adjusted to have electricity. In the early daylight, it gave little illumination, but probably would be more effective in the dark.
Number 8 Ponsonby Road was once the Auckland Savings Bank (Newton Branch) which was built in 1884. Two years later the original one storied building had a second level added. The ASB moved out some time ago, and the building now has other uses.
