On the bottom of every piece of Lego there is a number that you can look up on the net to find which sets it appears in. So if you have an unusual piece like this one you can tell it comes from a fire truck. This is handy when you have bought random pieces and you want to know which sets they came from. Also if you have pieces missing from a set you can buy them individually online.
