Cluck cluck!
Found this huge Hen of the Woods mushroom only feet from where I found one five years ago.. It's bigger than my head and almost as weighty. It does look something like a chicken's feathery rump but more like a leathery cabbage with its frilly 'leaves' and solid central core. It will provide several good meals as it can be cooked in a variety of ways. In 2012 son Huw prepared it Chinese-style for one of his signature feasts. He'll be home next weekend so I'll be keeping some for him.
Now that we foragers boast share our finds on social media, someone has informed me that the Hen of the Woods has its own tune, a delightful blue-grass melody by banjo-ist Noam Pikelny.
