Kolea
Down at Maunalua Bay early afternoon, was delighted to see this Pacific Golden-Plover posing at the end of the rock wall. In Hawaii, they are known as "kolea". They are so beautifully distinctive. They are part of the larger group called shorebirds. They are territorial birds and return late summer to the same site. They will leave in April to breed in Alaska. I had already seen kolea at Sandy Beach and on the lawn of the house above us, but this is the first one at the park at the bay. Didn't want to get too close, so took advantage of the telephoto.
