I spent a pleasant afternoon at the Wildlife Trusts Tewin Orchard Apple Day. Mike the apple expert had his work cut out dealing with queries. The apple in my image caught my eye from those on display and I asked if I could polish and capture it. Turns out it has great parentage, Peasgood's Nonsuch and Cox's Orange Pippin.
I went on a guided orchard walk and was surprised to learn that our English apples were not bred from local crab apples but from naturally sweet apples brought by the Romans from Kazakhstan. Our guide didn't mention the mass grubbing out of English apple orchards when the UK joined the EU and the market was swamped with cheap, and in the opinion of many, tasteless imported fruit.
