How on earth do you decide?

(And this is before you start thinking about mounts.)

This is a hypothetical question - I'm not thinking of having anything framed at the moment. And judging by my reaction even from outside the shop today I won't be having anything framed for the foreseeable future.

A couple of times in the past I've handed over something needing framing to my picture-framing neighbour and asked him to deal with it. The result was fine but I'm beginning to think I should perhaps know how to set about this.
