Indentured
When slavery was abolished, the British started a system of moving indentured laborers from India (and elsewhere) to their plantation colonies. In the years 1834 to 1920, some 250,000 indentured Indians were moved thru Kiddurpur port to Guyana. Jeanette’s great grandparents and great great grandparents were part of that crowd; a memorial was created in Calcutta in their honor but it is difficult to find / visit. Born in Guyana but now living in Canada, this is Jeanette's first ever trip to India; it was a moving experience for her to log into the port security book so she could visit the memorial. See extra.
