Around the globe in... 10 seconds
The Great Globe at Durlston is one of the largest stone spheres in the world. Constructed of Portland stone It weighs about 40 tonnes and is 3 metres in diameter. It was made in Greenwich and transported here by boat in 1887!
John Mowlem, a Swanage-born man, was a stonemason and builder he was the founder of the quarrying and construction company Mowlem. His nephew George Burt purchased an undulating tract of land covering Durlston Head in the 1860's, He developed this estate as a tourist attraction.
After waiting for the morning rain to clear we walked along the coast to this place (now a café).
Now watching a storm crashing into town!
