Office Retreat at Smitswinkel Bay
A friend of the bosses loaned us their communal cottage on the peninsula for two days, so the whole group took a team-building getaway. The Director, Jane, had a good one when Zandile started complaining about the lack of cell phone service: "You'll just have to experience what life was like a few years ago!" And we did. And with the lack of electricity, we experienced life a few years before that as well. The cottage and little village where it rests were very beautiful, and since the steep valley can only be accessed by foot, it has a great untouched, subsistence feel to it. I had a chance to get to know my new ADT Teach partner, Avuyile, much better, as well as Bongani, the coordinator for our new Hope Scholars project (many of us crusaded against using "Hope" in the title of any of our projects, but in the end the donors put their foot down for the cheesy title. After an afternoon at the beach we had a glorious braai until dark, then filled the house with lanterns and candles, told stories, and shared a voluminous box of red wine. I played some guitar, poorly, and got a few people to sing along for a few verses. At the end a bunch of us decided to pull our mattresses out onto the deck to sleep, a terrible idea that nonetheless zipped up a fantastic night.
