Hop Dog Caterpillar
The correct name is Pale Tussock Moth Caterpillar. This is from the back, large is impressive. To see it all click here.
The caterpillars were known as 'hop dogs' by hop pickers who frequently found them among the crops. They're less likely to be found in hop fields these days due to the use of pesticides. The hairy green and yellow caterpillars have a black band around each body segment, and a tuft of red-brown hair at the tail end. The brightly coloured hairs protect them from birds, and other predators. The adult moths do not feed but the caterpillars eat oak, birch, lime and, of course, hop leaves. This one was found climbing up the architrave in the house; I guess it got lost.
I thought I already had a blip for today. A beautiful morning with a cloudless sky surely meant one last (maybe) blue sky over blip for the year. This was one possibility. I liked the pattern made by the electricity cables.
