Just a little different from yesterday...

We're on our way to Lisbon, travelling via Bilbao because I've wanted to see the Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum ever since I saw a photo of its strange shiny forms twenty years ago. But I've had little chance to research anywhere else on our route so it was great to have last night's host confirm that we should take the narrow-gauge train to San Sebastian then advise us to stay there for a few hours rather than race on.

Such a pleasant place to spend a sunny afternoon! We ambled up the wide tree-shaded avenue by the river towards the sea and were astonished under one bridge to see the river tumbling over rocks towards the sea, met by waves coming up-river. No still photo can show what's really going on in the clash of white water and wave crests but I tried.

The river and a delight of narrow streets in the old town separate two beautiful sandy bays in one of which I spent so much time taking contre-jour shots of silhouettes and sparkling sea that I completely failed to spot a sand-artist at work (extra).

Then a bus to Bilbao where we discovered that our last-night's host was completely wrong to tell us that it was 'grey with modern art added'. We had an evening walk through the elegant centre and the attractive old town.
