Magnetic Island, Australia

Magnetic island is just off the shore of Townsville and around a 20 minute ride on the ferry. As we couldn't check into our hostel straight away someone had suggested we go up to Hawkings point lookout on the island. This was supposed to be "the easiest hike" on the island and suggested 30 minutes... it took us about an hr/hr and a half! (with lots of stops due to the heat and uphill, uneven route!) It was certainly a great view from the top though, you could see all round the island and out to Townsville. On the way there we came across a snake on the other side of the road! and by the time we got back from our hike it was still there. It was brown, short and fat and we learned later that this was a "Death adder" which is the 9th most venomous snake in the world!! Luckily we didn't go near it.
