Honey Fungus
My brother's garden has a large weeping willow tree which died unexpectedly a couple of years ago. This autumn, the trunk is ringed with a profusion of honey fungus. It sprouts from beneath the bark which is prised upwards as the fungus pushes forth. It's rather amazing that very slow but persistant forces can achieve this disruption.
This photo was taken early morning. A spider was busy overnight.
