Katherine, Earl Grey, Quotidien

Reasonable - that is, human - men will always be capable of compromise, but men who have dehumanized themselves by becoming the blind worshipers of an idea or an ideal are fanatics whose devotion to abstractions makes them the enemies of life.

An early morning visit to St Mary’s. Mum is eating breakfast in bed- apparently the porridge is very good. She talks about being discharged in the next few days.

I walk through sunny Westminster streets to Victoria, where I meet Katherine at Le Pain Quotidien. She hasn’t been well, but seems to be recovering, though she insists that her brain isn’t functioning the way it should.

We have a very pleasant conversation. She expounds on some of the patterns and principles that she’s trying to commit to paper. I often lose the thread between her simple descriptions and the powerful outcomes. I’ll take away her assertion that an excess of empathy in an organisation usually leads to mediocrity.

On the way home, I get a call from mum. There’s more bleeding. They need to do more investigations. They’re transferring her from Acute Assessment to .Gastroenteronomy. Not going home in the immediate future.

Back at the flat, I get down to work with Jon, who has come up from Taunton. We spend the rest of the day getting Cucumber-JS 2 working on Cyber-Dojo. And by eight o’clock, it’s live!

Jol comes and goes. He’s visited mum, but needs to get back to Swindon.

Steak and roast veg for tea. A call from mum in her new room. Louise coming up for an early meeting tomorrow. It’s all a bit of a blur.
