Honey Creek School....

This area, to the West of Milwaukee, was first settled in 1835 by 3 men—friends & business partners—who traveled from New York to Chicago looking for land to raise their families and for starting their businesses. When they arrived in Chicago, they were captivated by the stories of the new city of “Milwaukie” being settled further north, & decided to go see for themselves. Arriving west of the “new” city they thought they’d found paradise—abundant game, fertile land, a huge creek running through the area and huge stands of walnut, oak and maple trees. They staked their claims, then returned to New York to collect their families. They called this area—now known as the city of West Allis—Honey Creek.
As the area began to grow, the search was on for someone willing to come to this remote area to teach the children. They finally found a man and his sister—both teachers—who agreed to come, and in 1860 this one room school house was built, being used until the turn of the century. It’s now maintained by the Historical Society, & is used for teaching children how their counterparts of the 1800’s lived and studied.
