At the end of visits to my Scottish granny we would watch for her waving a hanky out of her back window as we headed up round the bypass. I only remember seeing it once or twice, as I didn't know exactly where to look. Sometimes, before mobiles, family members would use phone boxes to confirm arrival at places by ringing and letting the phone ring a set number of times but not connecting, to save 10p. Every few years I seek to end up having to write something which does the programmatic equivalent of telling something to watch or listen for something else, or putting a note behind a particular brick, or leaving a key under the mat. This particular instance isn't as bad as some as it's all-in the same application, albeit different instances thereof, in layers through which official means of communication work in only one direction.
