Leaving the Desert

Once again, I am leaving the desert of southern California. I am amazed at the huge expanse of the deserts here in the southwest. The deserts continue from here, through Arizona (bikerjim) and New Mexico to Texas (mats, mia). The population is crowded towards the Pacific coast (Carol,bluesheep).

As we are climbing to 38,000 feet I am wondering...

Where do all of those little roads go?

Who lives in those little houses there in the desert surrounded by nothing, out in nowhere? There's no water. There's no greenery. There's no electricity.

Why are there little runways out in the middle of nowhere? (Well, I know the answer to that!)

What do people do down there?
