I love Herdwicks.
I knew nothing of the breed before my first visit to the Lake District at age 17, when I was entranced by the area. It's perfect blend of green, undulating valleys, the grandeur of the high peaks, white-washed cottages with round chimney pots, miles and miles of stone walls, and everywhere these gorgeous looking sheep.
The origin of the breed is unknown, but it is thought that their ancestors were introduced by early Norse settlers. Now 99% of all Herdwicks live in the central and western Lake District.
