Traces Of Old York
Varvill's Court | York, UK
A series is born...
I don’t have to tell you there are many things old, about Old York. What interests me is not so much as the ancient artefacts (engaging though they are), are the traces of times past, the last century or two or maybe even within our lifetime.
There are lots of old ephemera from the last couple of centuries that people just ignore or haven’t noticed. There are street signs, adverts, architectural details, street furniture that epitomise York in earlier (more recent than ancient) times.
Call them “traces” if you will, but what you’re not going to get is the chocolate box side of York or the bits the tourist love to snap. Of course, you know that I also like to take the odd pic of those, mind... ;)
The images today, to kick off are of a signs down a little snicket that I suspect many, many tourists and locals alike walk past every day into town and miss. A series more wide-ranging than the "Bicycles Of Old York"; let's just see where it takes me...
A lovely American lady spotted me taking the images and stopped to chat and asked: “Hey, is that something I should be taking a photo of?” You betcha Sister!!
The title of the series, by the way, is a nod to the Blip-friend who is encouraging me to do this...
