Cheviot view
We had intended to have a working morning, followed by an afternoon out. But it was such a glorious day - and the nights are drawing in - that we decided to make the most of it, and abandoned the work!
MrM drove us down to Alwinton. No red flags flying, so we were able to continue on through Upper Coquetdale on the roads through the MOD training area. Some spectacular scenery through the hills on some of the most remote roads in the country (according to the information board near Alwinton).
The Roman marching fort of Chew Green (extra), a short distance from the border ridge between England and Scotland, is clearly visible from the road. Some fabulous views of the Cheviot and Hedgehope Hill (main photo - Hedgehope is to the right).
Further along we passed firing ranges, and also several old tanks and military vehicles, all peppered with bullet holes - apparently they are used for target practice. Before joining the A68, we followed Dere Street (the Roman Road that ran from York to Scotland and beyond) for a while.
Then MrM drove us down to Bellingham, where we had a short walk with Louie, part of the way to Hareshaw Linn before heading to the Redesdale Arms for a meal. We didn't get to see the fireworks in Elsdon as intended, but never mind - maybe next year. It was a lovely day out all the same.
