Smoke

From 1st November until 30th April we are allowed to burn horticultural waste in the mornings as long as there has been enough rain for the surrounding land not to be tinderbox dry. People are strimming the ground beneath their olive trees. People are hitting their trees with sticks and people are gathering fresh olive branches to take to their sheep and goats as fodder. Loose bits of horticultural waste are raked together in small piles and burnt.

We have learned that you must not save it all to the end and have a massive fire in the afternoon, which is rather a pity. The last time we had one of those we invited the expat community round on 5th November for beer and sausages and our bonfire was so mighty that it was concerned folk on Skiathos who shopped us to our local community law enforcement people, who couldn't see it themselves because we are tucked away in a little valley that looks out to sea.

Here are the good people of Glossa having appropriate bonfires in the morning as well as an overhead cable running smack through the middle of the image. These are now so familiar to me that I hardly notice them unless there is an interesting bird of prey perched waiting. So I haven't selected the other photo without the cable because I prefer this image and I can ignore the cable.
