Mining Memorial in Picadilly
This giant Davy lamp is a memorial to all those who worked in Dexter and Kingsbury collieries. There is a flickering light on all the time in the lamp. Each brick in the wall commemorates a miner who worked at one fo the pits (or perhaps even both.) See some more images here.
Mining was a major industry in North Warwickshire and South Staffordshire. I remember many of the pits from my childhood. There is very little evidence now of where they were, and the impact they had on the area. My father was a miner - but not for long. It was hard and dangerous work
