Bolton Parish Church

Another of "my" (temporary) churches!    The earliest church at Bolton was erected in around 1240. It was placed under the superiority of the Canons of Holyrood Abbey and remained so for the next three hundred years. By 1804 the church had fallen into disrepair

The present building was opened in 1809.

A notable possession of Bolton Church is the Bolton Hearse, a horse-drawn vehicle believed to be the earliest surviving piece of Scottish coachwork still in existence. The hearse is kept in the National Museum of Scotland.

Robert Burns’ mother, Agnes Brown, is buried in the kirkyard.

Extras:    This is a wonderfully scenic part of the world.
