The Old Toll House
The original wooden bridge across the Teign at Shaldon was opened in 1827. It avoided a journey of 12-14 miles for transport that couldn't use the ferry. I imagine that time was money even then so I guess folks were pleased (?) to pay the toll to cross. In the 1830s it was 1 penny for foot passengers and the charges remained until 1948 although I dare say they might have increased a bit by then.
The Old Toll House seems to come up for sale quite regularly, I don't suppose it's all that convenient as far as parking and deliveries are concerned.
Thanks very much for stars, hearts and comments on yesterday's sunset seascape. It seems to be doing quite nicely, thank you all.
