The Wrestlers at Stowe
This autumn Stowe has welcomed another statue back into the landscape, reinstated on 6 Nov. 2017, it was missing for nearly a century. The figures of the Wrestlers, also known as the Roman Boxers, stood in the Labyrinth in the Western Garden, until the Temple-Grenville family came into crisis and had to sell of their possessions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original statue was sold in one of the great sales, but sadly we don't know what happened to it.
As part of the Landscape Restoration Programme, which is ongoing at Stowe, the statue of the Wrestlers has been faithfully copied from original bronzes at Blenheim Palace, cast in reconstituted stone and put back in place in the Labyrinth for the public to view once again.
